Buying Guide

Even if you’re an RC crawler fanatic, chances are you don’t know much about servos. Servos are often of the most critical components that are overlooked when it comes to performance.

This is why it’s important to know which factors are important in a Servo’s Performance.

Brushed Motor Size Ratings: Difference Between 550 & 540

One of the most notable aspects that are visible on a brushed motor is the 3-digit number on it. For example, all the motors mentioned above have a 550 rating on them.

So what does this rating mean? This denotes the size of the motor. More precisely the size of the metal can.

In laymen’s terms the higher the number the bigger the size of the can.

Similarly, the difference between a 550 brushed motor and a 540 motor is that the 550-rated motor is bigger. It is a centimeter longer than a 540 brushed motor. Although, it’s important to note that the diameter of the motors is the same.

The size rating is proportional to the torque but inversely proportional to the motor’s rpm. This means that the 550 motors will have a higher torque compared to an identical 540 motor. But this also means that the 550 motors will have less torque than the 540.

This is because the longer the length of the armature, the higher the number of wires wrapped around it. More wires mean more torque.

Voltage Rating: What It Entails

Now, a common misconception that people have about voltage is that it equates to power. The common assumption is that the higher the voltage rating the more powerful a motor is. However, this isn’t the case.

A DC motor’s voltage rating specifies the most efficient voltage while it is running. The torque increases as the voltage rises.

It is recommended you always use the specified voltage. The motor will not run if you apply too few volts, but too many volts can short the windings. This will result in power loss or full damage.

So if you have a voltage rating of 6-8.4V, you shouldn’t go on either side of the values. It is strongly advised you do not exceed the maximum voltage rating as it will damage the motor itself.

Torque Rating: What Does It Mean?

Torque is the rotational force a motor produces. The torque from a DC brushed motor is limited. It is very good for low speed but not that good for high speed.

Torque must also take into account operating and stall values. The operating torque of a motor is the torque it was designed to produce, while stall torque is the torque produced when power is supplied from stall speed.

Turn Rating & RPM On Motors: What Does It Mean?

Another rating that you commonly have on brushed motors is its turn rating or T. This is important to consider while buying any good-quality brushed motors. The turn rating is essentially the number of wires wrapped around the motor.

This works in conjunction with another attribute of the brushed motor: its speed or RPM (rotations per minute). Their relationship is inverse in nature.

A higher T value will result in a slower motor but higher torque. This is because having more wires creates more resistance.

For example, a 21T motor will have higher torque than a 16T motor. But the 16T motor will be faster than a 21T motor.

Question: Are all motors that have DC supply, brushed motors?

Answer: Not necessarily no. There are mainly two types of DC or Direct Current Motors. There are brushless or more commonly known as BLDC (Brushless DC) motors and brushed motors. Both of these have a direct current supply, but as per their name, one motor has a brush that commutates the motor for rotation. And the other doesn’t.

Question: Is it possible for my Tesla Motor to be brushed?

Answer: No, your Tesla vehicle can’t have a brushed motor. Nowadays, almost all hybrid vehicles contain a brushless DC motor. This is because of the numerous benefits a brushless motor has over a brushed motor.

Question: What are the benefits of using a brushed motor over a brushless one?

Answer: Brushed motors have increased torque and a wider range of speed. They are also more efficient and compact. They operate very smoothly at low speeds and have excellent speed control.
