We’ll start the list off with this looker from INJORA. This brand is super popular among RC users. This is even a good choice if you’re looking for top-quality 550 brushed motors.

Now, I know the aesthetics don’t mean much in terms of motors. But hear us out. This one didn’t reach the top spot for nothing, you know. 

This one comes in four different sizes. And that’s the thing we liked the most about this one. You can pick from 12T, 21T,29T, and 35T. So if you have varying requirements, these sizes might entice you.

Well, we picked up the 21T for our 1/10 scale Traxxas RC vehicle. And we had around two months to test out this review unit. 

Let’s talk about the installation first. Well, to be honest, it was simple. We didn’t have to tinker around with the motor too much. It fit right in place of the stock motor. So I can assure you that if you’ve swapped parts before, you won’t need another pair of hands to install this.

They boast a lot about their torque. I think it was decent, at best. I mean, we tried out a lot of motors before this one. And, this one seemed to have done the best job out of all of them.

What I was impressed with was the cooling. It’s one of the only motors with active cooling systems. Unlike most brushed motors in the market, you get a decent fan with this one. 

Now listen. This doesn’t prevent the motor from heating up too much. But I think the situation would’ve been much worse if the fan wasn’t there, to begin with.

During our two months of testing, we didn’t notice any hiccups with the motor. But we have seen a couple of complaints about faulty wirings. I presume that those were isolated issues since ours was a good unit. I hope they replaced the motors for those poor souls.

In terms of controls, this one was actually simple. The motor ramps up to high RPMs in a quick time. So you don’t have to wait a lot to get the front place in a race. The acceleration seemed pretty decent if you ask me.

Overall, if you’re interested in a stock replacement, I think this will give you a great start. For the price, I think you should try this out. I think this can turn a few heads.

Coming in at second place, we have this motor from Axial. You don’t get a lot of turn options with this like the first one. But there are definitely things you might like about this. So, let’s start with it. 

We were told that this one would be good for both rock racers and rock crawlers. Unfortunately, we only had a Traxxas crawler with us. So we had to make do with what we had. 

In terms of installation, the process was smooth. I mean, I think it could have gone smoother. But this was fairly easy. I think the ends of the wires need a bit more work. For this part, you might need an actual extra pair of hands.

We were able to play with this one for around two months. And we tested this out intensely. I think we put a lot more pressure on this one than the first one.

But this motor seemingly passed all the tests. In terms of price, this is quite similar to the first one. So, the performance should be similar, at least on paper.

When it comes to performance, I think the torque got a massive performance boost. I know, it’s nothing mind-blowing. But the improvement is notable, especially if you compare it with the stock one.

This motor is capable of reaching higher RPMs. But it did heat up quite a lot. Another complaint we had about this one is that its’ awkwardly loud. The other motors didn’t seem to make weird sounds. But this one did. And this doesn’t paint a good image if you ask me.

But the overall motor operated smoothly. I think the whole team here was satisfied with the results. And they had a ton of fun while playing with the crawler with this motor attached.

I’m not going to skip this since it bothered me a bit. The motor does claim that the shaft size is 3mm. But it’s actually a fraction of a millimeter bigger. The difference is so much that it didn’t fit in a 3mm connector. So you have to keep this in mind. You might need an extra adapter for this.

We believe this is a good step if you’re just starting out in the world of modifications, for starters. If you’re rocking that stock brushed motor on your RC vehicle, then I think this can be a solid replacement.

Up next, we have this one from Traxxas. You probably expected them to be up top. But the others beat Traxxas today. And, now I’ll tell you why.

Unlike most days, this time, the Traxxas part is the most affordable choice on the list. Funny, isn’t it? Well, this is a good part of the review. Since this doesn’t have a lot more to offer. Geez. I think that was a bit harsh.

Let’s move on, though.

I’ll start with what I hated about this. It’s how hot it got. I mean, they even warn you with a caution sticker on the body. But I think it still gets too hot.

It’s a decent replacement if you’re still rocking the OEM part for your crawler. I think they could’ve used better materials and improved the build quality too. This isn’t built like a tank if you’re comparing it to most Traxxas products.

Ours fell from our hands “accidentally.” And it already had a dent on it. It didn’t affect the performance. But I still think they should have put more emphasis on the durability aspect.

When it comes to installation, the entire process was easy. We didn’t need to tinker with the motor too much. And it fits right into place. 

In terms of performance, well, we’ve already talked about how hot this gets. But it can also take the heat. When it gets hot, the motor somehow keeps the consistent RPM. 

I don’t know how this will hold up in the long run, but at least it’s working like a charm now. I know, it seems concerning. And the constant heating issue will end up hitting the motor hard in about a years’ time. Well, then you can get another one because it’s cheap.

Coming in at fourth place, we have this 12 turn motor from Globact. It’s not a conventional name you’re going to hear everywhere. But this guy managed to get into our top five. And, we’re about to tell you how.

We were pleasantly surprised by the build quality of this one. I mean, the detailing seemed pretty good. And the fact that you can get this on multiple turns is the good part. 

We got the 12T version for this review. And it had a couple of quirks that we liked.

The build quality seemed pretty decent. I mean, we didn’t throw this one around across the room. But the motor seemed to be built decently.

In terms of performance, well, we have mixed feelings. I acknowledge the fact that this can ramp up to those higher RPMs pretty fast. But I think this motor has thermal throttling issues at a certain temperature. 

Yes, when this gets too heated, the performance isn’t up to par. So I wouldn’t recommend this one for the longer races. If you’re just taking your crawler for a casual stroll, I think this would do just fine.

We tried it out with one of our 1/10 scale crawlers. The installation was simple since we didn’t have to mess around with it too much. But the performance is where it surprised us. 

This might not be the best in high temperatures, but I think you should be fine for the most part. Again, I repeat that this isn’t going to be the best choice if you’re looking for sheer competitiveness. 

But it’s a decent brushed motor that shouldn’t have any problems lasting a year.

Lastly, we have this one from Goolsky. They kept the design language quite simple. I’m guessing they did this on purpose to cut costs. And it worked in their favor.

You don’t get a ton of options with this one. But I guess you have other motors to choose from if you truly need the sizes. 

They claim long-lasting performance, but I think we need a year-end update about this one. Since we only had this for three months, we couldn’t have that long look at this one.

During our short time with it, we observed that the motor did well under pressure. I mean, this thing hit the higher RPMs quite fast. But it was able to hit that performance during every ride consistently.

We paired this one with a 1/10 scale RC crawler we had lying around. And there was a significant performance boost too. So why is this in last place? I’ll tell you why.

The sound that this motor makes is downright obnoxious. I don’t think I’ve heard a louder brushed motor during our time with the reviews. And in terms of boosting the torque, well, the boost is ever so slight.

You might only be able to notice it once you place it side by side with an OEM version. So, there’s that.

But if you’re just starting out, I think it’s still a decent choice. And it saves you a couple of bucks too. So why not go for it?

Buying Guide

Now that you’re done with the reviews, it’s time to place your hands on a motor, right? Not quite. I think it’d be helpful if you checked out these factors. If you consider these, you can probably get a better deal if you’re aware of all of the factors. A buying guide is important even while getting good-quality glue for your RC.

Make Sure It Hits Those High RPMs

Since you’re reading this, I think you’re looking for a motor that makes the performance better. Well, in that case, the RPMs talk a lot.

And if you’re not getting a motor with higher potential RPMs, you won’t get your desired performance. But bear this in mind. Just because a motor has a high RPM rating doesn’t necessarily mean that it can put out those numbers on a daily basis.

Here’s the summary. These motors have the tendency to get hot. And the longer they run on those high RPMs, the hotter they get. Although they can handle the heat, they might not be able to sustain the high RPMs.

So pick a motor that can give out a consistent RPM rating rather than something that just hits a high number once or twice. You’re going to get better reliability out of these anyway.

The Heating Aspect

As we’ve just said, these motors can get hot. And when they operate at those higher RPMs for longer, you can see them deteriorating. This is due to the heat. You can count on the heat to damage the motors at some later point in their lives.

But the motors here are capable of handling the heat quite well. You can rely on these. I’m not saying that these don’t heat up. They do, but they seemed to be able to handle the heat well enough. And this is the important part when you’re hunting for a proper brushed motor. 


Question: Will any of these motors make my vehicle faster?

Answer: If you go out and pick a decent motor, there’s a significant chance that you’ll see improvements. Whether it’s improvements in terms of speed or torque, you will definitely notice. 

Question: Why does my brushed motor heat up?

Answer: The traditional brushed motors do have a tendency to heat up a lot. This shouldn’t be too worrying. Most of the motors on the list have the ability to handle themselves even in the craziest conditions. so if your motor gets heated, you shouldn’t be too worried. 

Question:  Am I underutilizing my motor?

Answer: You can only figure this out with the help of an analyzer. This can check the highest potential of a motor and tell you what you’ve done wrong. You can pick one of these up for a couple of bucks if you’re truly enthusiastic about your RC builds.
